The best wine decanters, and how a sommelier uses them

A decanter does two different jobs. For a young red it adds air, so the wine opens up and the tannins soften. For an old red it separates the wine from its sediment. The right shape depends on which job you need most.

A wide, flat base exposes more wine to air, which is what young, powerful reds need. A narrower decanter with a smaller surface is gentler, which is what older, fragile wines need. If you only buy one, choose a medium base that does both reasonably well.

Best everyday

Riedel Cabernet Decanter

Capacity
About 1 bottle
Best for
Young reds, everyday use
Cleaning
Hand wash

This is a decanter you will actually use on a Tuesday, not only on special occasions. The shape gives a full bottle enough surface to breathe, it pours cleanly, and it does not take over the table.

Watch outToo small for magnums and large groups.

Best splurge

Riedel Ultra Decanter

Material
Mouth-blown crystal
Best for
Cabernet, Syrah, Nebbiolo
Cleaning
Hand wash, decanter beads

A large, wide base gives a tight, tannic young red as much air as possible, which is exactly how we prepare these wines before service. It is also beautiful on the table.

Watch outFragile and too much air for old or delicate wines.

Best for the dishwasher

Zwiesel Glas Pure Decanter

Material
Tritan crystal
Best for
Frequent use
Cleaning
Dishwasher-safe

If cleaning a decanter is what stops you from using one, this solves it. Tritan crystal is tougher than regular crystal and the shape pours without drips.

Watch outCheck the size against your dishwasher before buying.

Best value

Bormioli Rocco Loto Decanter

Material
Glass, made in Italy
Includes
Airtight stopper
Cleaning
Dishwasher-safe

A simple, well-made decanter that does the job without a big price. The stopper is useful if you decant and do not finish the wine the same evening.

Watch outThicker glass than crystal options. It works, but it feels less refined.

Best budget crystal

Le Chateau Crystal Wine Decanter

Material
Lead-free crystal
Capacity
About 1 bottle
Cleaning
Hand wash

A good first decanter for someone starting to explore wine. The classic shape works for most reds, and it makes a nice gift.

Watch outHand wash only, and the thin spout needs care.

A note from the floor

For an old bottle, stand it upright for a day before opening so the sediment falls to the bottom. Pour slowly into the decanter in one steady motion with a light under the neck. Stop as soon as you see sediment reach the shoulder of the bottle.

How to choose

Buy a wide decanter if you mostly drink young, powerful reds. Buy a narrower, smaller decanter if you collect older wine. If you hate washing glass by hand, choose Tritan crystal. To clean any decanter, use warm water and stainless steel cleaning beads, never soap, and let it dry upside down.

Questions guests ask me

How long should I decant red wine?

Young, tannic reds: 30 minutes to 2 hours. Lighter reds: 15 to 30 minutes, or none. Old wines: decant just before serving, only to remove sediment.

Can you decant white wine?

Yes. Rich whites like oaked Chardonnay or white Burgundy can open up with 15 to 20 minutes in a decanter. Keep it cool while it breathes.

Do I need a decanter if I have an aerator?

An aerator is faster and works glass by glass. A decanter is gentler, handles sediment and looks better on the table. Many wine lovers have both.
